Saving Grand Central Terminal

GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL ADAPTIVE REUSE AND REVITALIZATION PROGRAM

Working with the Municipal Art Society and Metro North Commuter Railroad, KWH Associates developed the feasibility study and use recommendations that convinced the MTA to invest in Grand Central Terminal restoration and revitalization. KWH determined both market strength and viable uses for the underutilized, deteriorated terminal. KWH laid out the architectural and engineering scope of work and costs to recreate a vital transportation, retail/restaurant and civic center, while assisting Metro North select the project team and implement the $500m project.

 

 

Surveying Los Angeles

GETTY CONSERVATION INSTITUTE: LOS ANGELES HISTORIC RESOURCE SURVEY INITIATIVE

Through a collaboration with the Getty Conservation Institute and the City of Los Angeles and preservation, architecture, real estate and government stakeholders, KWH designed and initiated the first comprehensive, citywide historic resource survey in Los Angeles. The award-winning project, SurveyLA, fully links historic preservation with sound local planning and serves as a preservation planning model worldwide.

Preserving California State Parks

SIX ADAPTIVE USE AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP PILOT PROJECTS

With CA Department of Parks and Recreation and CA State Parks Foundation, KWH developed six pilot projects to identify appropriate revenue-generating uses and reuse partnerships for endangered historic properties in CA State parks. The projects included historic hotels, churches, retail properties, and museums. The innovative use proposals engendered support locally and within CA State Parks. The department selectively initiated revised programming, revenue generation, historic preservation and visitor services.

Reimagining Saint Vibiana Cathedral

MARKET ASSESSMENT AND BUSINESS MODEL FOR THE HISTORIC SAINT VIBIANA CATHEDRAL

KWH Associates worked with an interdisciplinary team of stakeholders, architects, engineers and prospective investors in determining use potentials for St. Vibiana. KWH identified strong market support for a distinctive performance and event venue with achievable revenue and program prospects. Vibiana is now one of the most beloved and successful landmark event spaces in the thriving Los Angeles downtown.

Pioneering Adaptive Reuse at Boston Old City Hall

One of the first modern adaptive reuse projects, Old City Hall was saved by transforming the abandoned Second Empire masterpiece into first class office space with Boston’s best restaurant on the ground floor and garden. Complex financing, ground-breaking architectural work and innovative leasing contributed to the successful adaptive reuse of this Boston landmark. 

 

 

Reprogramming The Grove Arcade

THE GROVE ARCADE OWNERSHIP AND ADAPTIVE REUSE FEASIBILITY STUDY 

KWH's market and economic feasibility study helped Asheville achieve the transfer of the GSA-owned Grove Arcade and set the direction for its adaptive reuse as shops, restaurants and apartments. The restored and revitalized Grove Arcade has been a significant catalyst for the revival of downtown Asheville.
